Golden rules
Posted on 07 May 2008

What are the reasons why older web sites are able to attain high rankings on the search engines whilst new web sites often struggle to achieve similar success?

Basically, it is a matter of trust. Search engines such as Google have difficulty finding out if a new domain is honest and dependable, so they invented a set of filters to down rank new web sites until they felt they were reliable.

It is not surprising that Google felt the need to do this, as spammers often buy vast numbers of domain names and fill them with poor content but hope to make money from ads that appear on these sites. Some webmasters also use new domains to research and test new search engine spamming techniques. Google does not approve of this behaviour, so it puts up barriers to prevent misuse. Therefore, it is most important to enable Google to trust your web site, and there are acceptable ways to do this by working within the rules.

What are the golden rules to gain high search engine rankings?

Use the correct keywords.
Be very specific with your keywords. For instance, if you use the term “motorbikes,”  this is a highly competitive word, so use the phrase “used motorbikes Manchester” to obtain better results, which should turn into sales.

Develop links to your web site.
You need incoming links. It is impossible to gain high rankings without good links from related web sites. Get appropriate links and Google will begin to trust you.

Optimise your web pages.
To increase your chances of getting high rankings, you have to tell the search engines which terms are the most important to you. Consequently, they will list your web site for the correct search terms. Search engines need to be able to browse your web page content easily, so when building a new web site make sure you bear this in mind.

Be patient.
A web site which has been online for many years has already gained the trust of the search engines. They need time to feel the same about you. Follow the rules above, do them in the right order and it is possible for new web sites to attain high search engine rankings.

SmartDeCat has superb SEO capability, and is designed to give you the opportunity to quickly put all the above rules into practise.
